Two years ago Google Android’s share of mobile banking users was minimal. Latest data from Comscore now pegs Google Android as the #1 mobile OS for mobile bankers, when in December 2010 it edged out Apple iOS for the first time.
In fact, Android now accounts for one in four mobile banking users, and smartphones combined represent 70% of the mobile banking user base.
However, the launch of the Verizon iPhone may change all of that yet. Our early data shows that about 35% of new mobile banking downloads on iOS are occurring on the Verizon platform, as discussed in Drew’s earlier blog post.
The unanswered question is whether these Verizon iPhone users are switch overs from AT&T, defectors from Verizon Droids, or simply net new users to the mobile banking population. We will simply have to watch closely the evolution of the market place. Only time will tell whether Android’s leadership is just a blip, or whether it’s going to be a sustained ascendancy.
Do you think that Google Android will become the dominant OS for mobile banking in 2011? Will it be a duopoly with RIM BlackBerry and Windows Phone fading in the distance? Tell us why or why not by sharing your comments below.
